In an effort to explore and better know online mapping tools, two of our GIS-trained staff members decided to hold an online mapping tool competition during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

Each challenger will be using 3 online mapping tools at random from the 6 tools that were selected among the competitors to map out the locations of Canadian Olympians who have won medals at the Games.

Both of our competitors are Olympic enthusiasts and thoroughly enjoy being part (in some way) the Olympic movement. There will be some sleepless nights over the next couple of weeks.

Rebecca (@bec_bart): GIS & Digital Resources Librarian, Data visualization guru and spreadsheet afficionado.

Joel (@Joelr55): Cartographic specialist, Data cruncher specialist and information gatherer.

Progress updates, links and pictures of maps will be posted on the main library GIS Twitter account @GIS_Carleton. In addition, competitors will keep a spreadsheet of functionalities for these various tools to better help students and staff in the future with their use.

We wish them the best of luck!
